The work of public engagement relies on experienced, flexible facilitators. We support facilitators in our network with a focus on skills and strategies for helping all voices to be heard and connecting with other New Hampshire residents who are invested in proactive problem solving.
Participate Train Record Co-Facilitate Facilitate
People who serve as facilitators for New Hampshire Listens follow a pathway from participation in an event, attending a training, to serving as a recorder, to co-facilitating a group and finally facilitating their own group. We provide feedback from participants after each event and share feedback with one another to continually improve our skills. NH Listens assigns trained facilitators based on experience, skill level, and project location. Anyone is welcome to become trained as a NH Listens facilitator.
Facilitator Network Registration
Registering in our facilitator database will help us reach out to you for opportunities for local and statewide projects. In the same way that we value a mix of perspectives in our participants, we also value a mix in our facilitator network. By registering with NH Listens, we will collect contact information and a few details about who you are. The information you provide will be used by NH Listens when we are seeking facilitators AND by the local Listens organization of your choice. Our messages are limited and you can unsubscribe to this list at any time by contacting us at NH.Listens@unh.edu.
Many of us are trained to remain “neutral” when we serve as facilitators. However, that doesn't mean we are passive in the face of misunderstandings. This workshop helps enhance confidence to remain neutral, productively address issues, encourage and move conversation in a constructive manner. Fee $50 waived for students and those with financial need. Hosted with our partners at Everyday Democracy

Please join UNH Cooperative Extension and NH Listens to experiment with the power of interactive practice in sticky facilitation moments. Even after years of experience in community facilitation or public meetings, a tough participant can still make a seasoned facilitator’s heart race. We will work with UNH Theatre professor David Kaye and his group, PowerPlay Interactive Development, to gain new insights, techniques and skills. Join us as we dig into those heart-racing moments. The $25 Fee may be waived for students and those with financial need. Just let us know!
Many people feel alienated from public life but the good news is that public officials have the power to address many of the frustrations driving people away from being engaged. In this interactive lab we will practice real life scenarios, learn about best practices, and give public officials tools for creating meetings that deal with conflict in a healthy and professional manner. This daylong workshop is designed to give participants an understanding of the critical role of facilitators in the broad spectrum of public engagement work. We spend time discussing local and statewide projects, walking through a typical “talk to action” process, and emphasizing the principles that guide our work. Prior facilitation experience is helpful but not necessary. Dress is casual and meals, refreshments, and training materials will be provided. This training may be augmented by more extensive facilitator training offered annually by UNH Cooperative Extension. A $50 fee is waived for students and those with financial need.
