Sustainable Microenterprise and Development Program - New Hampshire Certificate

Course Fees and Registration

The tuition and room and board fee for the SMDP NH Certificate is $4,250.00, and full payment must be received no later than two weeks before the beginning of the certificate. The fees include all course materials, field visits, accommodations, and meals as described below. Please complete the SMDP NH Certificate Registration Application at this link.

We are very pleased to make available MasterCard Foundation Microfinance Scholars Program scholarships. Please read the eligibility and application information listed below to see if you are eligible to participate in the MasterCard Foundation Scholarship opportunity.

Accommodations and Meals

Lodging:

On-campus accommodations will be dorm style with a private bedroom and a shared bathroom.

SMDP students will stay in the UNH Southeast Residential Community (SERC) Building (http://www.unh.edu/housing/reshalls/SERCA.html) which provides traditional residence hall-style housing. Common areas include a recreation lounge, three small study lounges, as well as a kitchen and laundry facilities. The SERC building has air conditioning and is wheelchair accessible with the inclusion of an elevator and modified central entry. There are hotel options within walking distance, but prices are considerably more expensive than on-campus accommodations. There will be a discount of $525 from full Tuition/Room and Board fees for non-residential (commuter) students. While housing will not be provided, all meals described above will be included.

 

SERC Building

Meals:

The SMDP will provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner five days a week during classes and coffee/tea breaks twice per day. We will hold a closing banquet and certificate ceremony for all students and faculty on Friday June 27th. Weekend meals are the responsibility of students. There are several options both on and off campus for restaurant meals and a full-service supermarket with takeout food.

Location:

The Sustainable Microenterprise and Development Program - New Hampshire will take place on the University of New Hampshire campus in Durham, New Hampshire, USA. Durham is located approximately one hour and fifteen minutes from Boston, Massachusetts. Airport transportation is not covered in the Tuition and Room and Board fees. Once you are registered we will send you options for travel from Boston's Logan International airport or the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport or other locations at www.unh.edu/transportation/visitor/index.htm.

MasterCard Foundation Microfinance Scholars Program Scholarships

We will award several MasterCard Foundation Microfinance Scholars Program scholarships through a competitive application process. Applicants are expected to contribute full travel costs and up to $1,000 towards program costs. Please read the MasterCard Foundation eligibility criteria below and complete the application located at the link below only if you meet all listed criteria.

The SMDP-New Hampshire Certificate MasterCard Foundation Scholarship application deadline is CLOSED.

Selection Preferences:

  • Practitioners who have at least two years of experience in the microenterprise development field
  • Practitioners who work in Africa
  • Practitioners who work for NGO or Development Finance Institutions and policy development organizations
  • Women practitioners
  • Candidates coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, preferably from rural and resource-poor areas
  • Candidates who can pay 100% the travel and related costs of attending and can contribute up to $1,000 towards program costs.

 Recommendation Criteria:

Scholarship recommendations will be determined by the following criteria:

  • How well does the applicant meet the selection preferences listed above?
  • What is the stated financial need of and actual support committed from each candidate?
  • Candidates who can pay for their travel and make a contribution of up to $1,000 will be considered over those who cannot.
  • Based on the candidate’s stated background profile, how will the scholarship make an impact on their professional development and to their organization?

All applicants will be notified via e-mail by no later than May 15, 2014. On “Name of your Sponsor” write “MasterCard Foundation Scholarship Applicant” and also list the name(s) and information of any other sponsor(s) that will contribute toward the cost of meeting your expenses to attend SMDP-NH Certificate.

Optional Academic Credit

SMDP NH Certificate students may be able to earn Masters-level academic credit for participation in the SMDP. The usual UNH summer tuition fees will apply, and academic credit students will be required to complete additional assessment assignments. If you are interested in earning academic credit, please contact the SMDP NH Certificate Coordinator William Maddocks at william.maddocks@unh.edu.

Payment Instructions

Students will make payments directly to the Carsey Institute/University of New Hampshire in U.S. dollars and can pay by check from a U.S. bank, credit card, or wire transfer. Credit card payments are subject to a 2 percent processing fee on the total transaction amount. Please note that if payment is made by wire transfer, you must add $35 for the wire transfer fee.

A deposit of $500.00 is due within 10 days of registration. The balance of tuition and housing fees is due before your arrival in New Hampshire. Payments may be made by credit card, wire transfer, or check. Full payment instruction can be found on the Registration Application.

United States Visa Information

The visitor visa is a type of non-immigrant visa for persons desiring to enter the United States temporarily for business (B-1) or for pleasure, tourism, or medical treatment (B-2). Please note: The U.S. visa process can be quite lengthy. It is strongly advised that you begin the visa application process once you have been accepted to attend the SMDP-NH Certificate.

Important Health Information

The cost of medical treatment is very high in the US. Hospitals and clinics are available at a cost if medical care is required. If you are more than 39 weeks pregnant, it is very important that you consult with your doctor before making travel plans.
