Bruce L. Mallory, professor of education, is the Carsey Institute's interim director. Bruce has been a practitioner and national leader in the deliberative democracy movement for the past 15 years. At the Carsey Institute, he provides technical assistance and leadership related to the use of deliberative processes for citizen engagement. As chair of the board of directors of the Democracy Imperative (www.unh.edu/democracy), which is currently housed within the institute, Bruce participates in national initiatives focused on the role of higher education in strengthening democratic practice. His primary objective at Carsey is to integrate effective forms of citizen deliberation into policy analysis and dissemination around research topics related to social and economic justice.
In recent years, Bruce has supported various forms of citizen dialogue throughout New Hampshire. Concentrating primarily on sensitive topics related to public education (e.g., governance, finance, curriculum content, consolidation, redistricting), Bruce has introduced the concept of study circles to dozens of community-based organizations. He has assisted national organizations, such as the Association of American Colleges and Universities, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, Campus Compact, the Spencer Foundation, and Everyday Democracy, in conceptualizing and implementing deliberative democratic practice for their constituents. He was an early advisor to Portsmouth Listens and serves on the board of the Paul J. Aicher Foundation. He currently co-chairs the working group on Capacity Building for Strengthening Our Nation’s Democracy. Bruce earned a doctorate degree from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, Special Education and Community Psychology, in 1979.
