The National Rural Assembly
and the Rural Compact

The National Rural Assembly is a new movement devoted to building a stronger, more vibrant rural America. To launch their work, this new organization has issued the Rural Compact, a statement of principles calling for positive changes for rural America that will benefit all of us and is seeking endorsements for these principles from people and organizations across the nation. As part of the Carsey Institute's work to support policies in rural America, the Institute has been involved with the Assembly since it's inception in June 2007. As a supporter of the Rural Compact, we encourage others to endorse its principles. Please visit the National Rural Assembly and sign the Rural Compact.

Senior Demographer Kenneth M. Johnson's latest Carsey report shows that New England is becoming more racially diverse. While it is growing more slowly than the rest of the nation there are sharp contrasts between the demographic trends in northern and southern New England as well as between trends in metropolitan and rural areas.
